  • Playlist Friday: Lies!

No, no, I'm telling the truth! It really is Friday, so it's time for...

If you didn't know, Playlist Friday is the way I celebrate Friday, breaking away from my usual randomness format to post a list of songs with some theme. Play along if you'd like! This week, the theme is Lies.

    1. Little Lies, Fleetwood Mac

Pretty sure I've posted this video in a playlist before, but whatevers. I like this song a lot. Listen to the lyrics: it's about a woman who wants her lover to tell her lies. She knows they're lies, but they're sweet lies that make her feel better.

Are there lies you'd like told to you, like, "Yes, you look nice today," or "No, those jeans don't make you look fat" ? Or would you prefer to be told the truth? Hmm....

    2. Would I Lie to You? Eurythmics

I've posted this song before, too, but it's a very good song. Annie Lennox has a wonderful voice, I like all her music. :)

This song sounds like a good answer to the question, "Do these jeans make me look fat?" "Sugar, would I lie to you?" ;)

    3. You Keep It All In, The Beautiful South

First off, watch this video because it doesn't make a lick of sense.

The Beautiful South is an English band which apparently nobody in America has ever heard of except for me, and that's only because they opened for Barenaked Ladies in 1990-whatever when I saw them live and loved them. I've somehow managed not to include them in a playlist before now, except for once in a cover-version, but here is an original song.

They have a song called Liar's Bar, which would seem to fit the premise of this playlist better, but I don't like as much. This song is more subtle. The husband keeps it all in, which is not quite like telling a lie, but refraining from telling the truth. His wife and friend are annoyed about this, but he points out that there is a good reason for keeping secrets. What this has to do with the penguin in the video I don't know, but I quite like the song.

    4. Lies, Elton John

This is possibly my favorite song on the album Made in England, not so much because of the lyrics, but because the music is pretty cool. The lyrics basically state the reasons why everyone lies: for drugs, for party dresses (?), about their youth, etc, etc. There's also something in there about how the great writers make lies believable because they sound like the truth. Think about the best fiction you've ever read or watched. You liked it because it felt real. Of course it's all lies: Luke Skywalker never existed, nor did his mission or the Jedi or any of that. But it felt like the truth, so it was awesome.

    5. Bed of Lies, Matchbox 20

A bed of lies is a bed shared with a lover you no longer care about. You want to keep going, but it's over. At some point, it becomes unbearable to live that lie, and you can't sleep there anymore. That's when you have to move on.

So, that's all for this week.

What songs do you know about lies?

How do you feel about people who lie to you? Is it okay sometimes?

    Do you often tell lies?

Next week, I'm going to explore the unexplored. There are many artists I like but am not overly familiar with. The theme next week will be: Explorations of the Unknown...songs by artists that I like and need to hear more from.

Stay tuned, and have a great weekend everyone. :)
